The Simple Code (age 7-9)

The Simple Code introduces the essential building blocks of reading and spelling. We focus on helping children “crack the code” by explicitly teaching them to sound out (decode) and spell (encode) unfamiliar words through a systematic, evidence-based approach. Our goal is to inspire a love of literacy while ensuring every child has the tools to succeed from day one. 

Cost: $45 per session, $360 per 9-week term + $25.00 one off fee for materials

Class Time: Thursday 3:45pm-4:30pm

Class frequency: 1 class per week (45 min)

The perfect foundation for children beginning their reading journey or those needing extra support in the fundamentals.

Key Focus Areas:

  • Phonemic Awareness:Explicit instruction in phonemic activities like blending, segmenting, and manipulating sounds 
  • The Simple Alphabetic Code:Recognising letters and their most common sounds.
  • Encoding and decoding:Developing the skills to read and spell one-syllable words.
  • Vocabulary:Expanding students’ knowledge of a multitude of words.
  • Transcription skills:Establishing the correct pencil grip, starting points, and letter formation.
  • Confidence:Building self-esteem by ensuring our students experience success. Success breeds motivation!

Included for every student:

  • A personalised workbook to document learning and achievement
  • Access to a variety of decodable readers.
  • Weekly take-home resources to consolidate learning.

The Extended Code (age 7-9)

Designed for children with a solid understanding of the basic alphabet, The Extended Code transitions learners into advanced phonics. We explicitly teach double consonants, consonant digraphs, and the vowel codes necessary to correctly interpret and spell sophisticated language. This class integrates the six key components of effective reading instruction with refined handwriting guidance, helping students master the art of written communication.

An advanced program for students ready to master the complexities of the English writing system.

Key Focus Areas:

  • Advanced Phonemic Awareness:Skilfully manipulating sounds within words.
  • Advanced Decoding:Mastering the complex vowel and consonant codes.
  • Multisyllabic Success:Confidently reading and spelling multisyllabic words.
  • Reading Fluency:Reading targeted texts with accuracy, appropriate pace and expression.
  • Vocabulary:Expanding students’ knowledge of a multitude of words.
  • Confidence:Building self-esteem by ensuring our students experience success. Success breeds motivation!
